Intro to Splitboarding: Come Ride the New Mexico Backcountry!

Being out in nature in one of our Intro to Splitboarding courses and away from the hustle and bustle of the ski area is getting more popular than ever! Learning how to use your equipment will help you be more confident and have more fun in the backcountry. In this course you learn how efficiently transition from ski to ride mode, skinning techniques, day tour planning, and how maintain and store your equipment. Spending the first day in a class setting will allow for practicing transitions, answering questions, planning a day tour as a group. On the second day we will go in the backcountry and execute the tour plan.

Intro to Splitboarding Prerequisite- Companions Rescue Course
Prerequisite: Rescue Course; Avy 1 (recommended)

Day 1 -4 hours- Explain how different splitboards, bindings, skins, poles work. Also showing other equipment- backpack, repair kit, beacon shovel probe and how to properly carry them. Students will also learn about timely and efficient transitions, proper use of climbing wires, and how to perform kick turns.
Day1 -4 hours- Discuss about how to plan a tour. Starting time, decision making points, drop times. Importance about temps and starts. A little about group dynamics and decision making. Use of apps such as Fat Map, CalTopo and Gaia. Students will plan tour for next day.
Day 2 -8 hours- Meet at the trailhead and go for a tour discussing the things learned the day before. During tour students will demonstrate skinning technique, kick turns, switching over from ski to ride mode, decision making, and executing planned decent.
